For the birds

These aren't the most exciting shots, but I'm proud of them because I've been trying for more than a year to get a good, clean shot of a great blue heron. Today, the coming cold weather is making them flock together and act crazy. That gave me several chances to catch one. The four images above are of the same bird. I got fairly close to him before he took off and then followed him until he was out of range. You can click on the images for a larger view.

Shooting wildlife and sports are two areas in which equipment matters. Ultimately, I'd have at least a 300 mm lens (this was taken with the long end of a 70-200 zoom). Working with what I have, I had to get close to the elusive creatures. They are really skittish, probably tired of being chased by chatty children and beleagured photographers. I can now leave them alone ... until I get my hands on that 300 mm lens!
